World Scout Jamboree – 2027

What is a World Scout Jamboree?

Since its inception in 1907, and subsequent rapid growth, our Founder – Robert Baden-Powell (BP) – had wanted to arrange a gathering of young people who had joined his developing movement. The war in 1914 / 18 prevented that happening, so the 1st World Scout Jamboree was held in the UK at Olympia, London in 1920.

The origins of the name of the event go back to the days when BP was a soldier, fighting in the Boer War. ‘Jambo’ is Swahili for ‘welcome’ – so the Jamboree is a welcome to Scouts from all around the world. Jamboree is now an international term used to describe a large gathering of Scouts. Since 1920, World Scout Jamborees have been held almost every four years, except during the Second World War, and hosted all over the world. Scouting exists in every country of the world bar 5 – Cuba, Laos, North Korea and China.

So what is it all about. The Jamboree is a way of recognising the solidarity of young people from all corners of the globe. Young people who come together recognising the same values of integrity, respect, care, belief and co-operation.

The next World Scout Jamboree is to be held in Gdańsk, Poland

WSJ and 1st Chelmsford

The previous WSJ was held in Saemangeum, South Korea in 2023. 1st Chelmsford Scout Group sent 3 young people and 2 adults to this event, along with 3 young people to other Expeditions ran by Essex Scouts.

This time around, we have 2 young people: Alexander and Molly who have been selected as two of 72 young people from Essex going to the Jamboree. Between them, they have to raise £8000 to be able to attend. This will be completed through various fundraising events such as fayres, quiz nights, table-top sales, and much more!
